Balthrop, Alabama
Brother George

Website
A Brief History of Brother George ---raised on mars, the land of fine spices; Developed an allergy to martian milk (the only ingredient in martian meals); Sublet their garden apartment, and moved to a more suitable home with less martian madness (a side effect of a menacing bacterial infection acquired through too much martian milking.)---

Balthrop, Alabama

Website
You may have heard that the town of Balthrop was founded in 1847 in Alabama’s Iron Belt. You might also have heard that Balthrop was once a booming steel town, but these days it has relaxed into an easier pace, providing a home to a close-knit community of shopowners, innkeepers, handymen, farmers, students, and a milkman. They do a pretty good job of keeping each others’ secrets. Or so you may have heard. In fact, the band Balthrop, Alabama was formed in early 2006 in Brooklyn, New York by Alabama-born songwriter-siblings Pascal and Lauren Balthrop and eight or nine of their musically-inclined neighbors. They get together every so often to sing songs about dead people in love.

The Lost Cartographers

Website
IMAGINARY CHICAGO RECORDS presents WALK ON, the debut album from The Lost Cartographers, featuring ten original songs from the Chicago quintet. Led by three singer-songwriters, the band tells tales of train tracks, setbacks, leaving, love, and loss. Sultry lead vocals and haunting harmonies light the way as the group travels through a landscape filled with the sounds of Americana, bluegrass, country, folk, jazz, and rock.

Ne'er Do Evers

Website
The Ne'er Do Evers are an animated mix-tape of anger, humor and vulnerability, each emotion likely to merge into and/or trample on the others at any moment. The Ne'ers play music that is fifty percent heavy thoughts and fifty percent knee-jerk reactions with a sound best described as full- on in-your-face visceral mooning, a distillation of art, alcohol and attitude not only intoxicating but mind-numbing in a good way.

Psychedelic/ Rock

The Red Plastic Buddha

Website
Neo-psychedelic renegades, Chicago's Red Plastic Buddha live in that half-light between the flower power of Carnaby Street and the darkness of an LSD trip gone wrong. Their music layers guitars, keyboards, and wave upon wave of vocal harmonies over insistant rhythms to create a psychedelic experience that goes far beyond mere imitation of their influences.

The Luck Of Eden

Website
Popped psychedelic rock and rollism……. The Luck of Eden Hall formed in 1989, releasing a single, a compilation and a video on Limited Potential records, two E.P.s and a Full length CD, ‘Belladonna Marmalade’, on Walrus records. The E.P. titled ‘Under The Sea’ landed the band on the cover of CMJ. The Video was included in the New Line Cinema film ‘The Day My Parents Ran Away’. In 1994 the band crawled under a rock……. The Luck of Eden Hall crawled out from under that rock in 2007 with the release of ‘Subterrene’ and has just released a new album ‘When The Clock Starts To Wake Up We Go To Sleep’ this year. This is what some critics have to say……. “13 slices of prime time psych nuggets, each wrapped in a delicious candy floss coating, and riding some blistering, guitar fueled, fairground rides.” Terrascope.co.uk “an excellent psychedelic band!” Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins.com “a future psychedelic classic!” Simon Lewis, Terrascope “get this masterpiece!” DJ Astro, Psychotronic Zone “a very satisfying listening experience!” K. Wallbank, Psychedelic Central

Website
We like to play fast songs with lots of chords and catchy hooks. We take bits of Devo, Frank Zappa, Sparks, Cardiacs, Mr. Bungle, and lots more stuff that we like, then re-arrange them until it sounds like us. Our newest album is a rock opera entitled Spring Break '86. It's cool as hell!

The Armed Forces

Website
They're a shoulder-shimmying strumpet with a runaway past, a joyriding, drug-addled gallon of gas looking for a sucker to light their lucky. Glam punk-poppers Armed Forces plays a decadent, rebellion-riddled three-card monte of '60s garage-soul organ, bloozy, slashing blasts of guitar Thunders, and frontman Brandon Jazz's cooly importuning vocals. The indefatigable, energetic rhythms power big hooks sprinkled with backing harmonies, often suggesting a slightly grimier iteration of fellow Nashville residents The Pink Spiders (one guests on debut EP, Modern Gospel for Modern Men & Women). A combustible blend of glue-huffing threats, loitering libido and knee-jerk defiance, Armed Forces is a reminder seditious teen spirit springs eternal. —Chris Parker

Automata

Website
Automata’s sound is like a lucid dream: there’s a subtle familiarity in it that lures you into something altogether otherworldly. Blending dub, soul, pop, blues and rock with break beat, electronic, ambient and classical music, the Chicago-formed quartet seamlessly shifts through an endless spectrum of organic and mechanical textures. One is likely to find themselves meandering through a spaghetti western one moment, a Kingston dance hall the next. If that’s not engaging enough, Automata pairs their tracks with psychedelic video and film work for their live performances, overwhelming audiences with swells of sights and sounds.

Moritat

Website
In 2003 Corey McCafferty (drums) met and played in a band called I/O with Konstantin Jace (bass). Venus Laurel (piano, vocals) then worked w/Corey on her solo album and in 2008 the three of them moved into a house and formed Moritat. Drawing from Chicago’s rich tradition of instrumental rock music as well as influences as diverse as Sonic Youth and Kate Bush, the group continually crafts their unique sound in their basement studio. Moritat is currently working on a self-produced EP to be released later this year.

The Tree

Website
the tree was formed in 1999 to perform at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, for their "the Art of Film in the 20th Century" exhibit. This formation was the latest incarnation of what was known as: "andrew & the TRee". The MCA performance also featured a backround film, or metaphor collage, titled "Indelible Ink's Out of Stock" (More in Branches>>). In y2K, the tree re-emerged for a show at the Hideout in Chicago, to support the release of Andrew Robb's solo release: "Burning Bush". This lineup included keyboardist extraordinaire & composer, Jeff Kowalkowski, who also appears on the new release. Although "Burning Bush" received critical acclaim and limited airplay, there was little follow up in terms of the band playing and developing. Then, in 2004, Robb contacted the nascent rhythm section (Mark & Sam) with a concept and proposition: "Since we enjoy playing music together so much, and there's so much potential there, why don't we convene regularly, develop a "language" and "history", and then start to record this musical unfolding". So, that was the start of the tree. We do it because it our enriches our lives, making us happier people. We do it because we're fascinated with the process of making music, are in it for the "Long Haul", and now feel compelled to .... SHARE IT WITH YOU!

The Delta Routine

Website
With their infectious blend of rock, grunge & blues, The Delta Routine is quickly becoming one of Milwaukee’s favorite groups. High octane rock ‘n roll inspired by classic rock greats like the Rolling Stones is the meat of a musical endeavor called “Donna,” the first full length album by The Delta Routine produced by Mike Hoffmann. Embracing the raw elements of guitar driven rock of new and old, singer/songwriter and guitarist Nick Amadeus creates memorable hooks and quirky riffs all while paying homage to the old days of rock ‘n roll. A strong local following paired with a powerful new album has The Delta Routine on a road to bigger and better things. Hold on tight.

Bitterson

Website
BITTERSON is two things...a band and an attitude. Sometimes classic, sometimes modern, Bitterson's sound is a reflection of rock's raw emotion being chiseled out of yester-year's boy awoken by change to a modern-day man. As a long time songwriter and guitarist, founding member Phillip Amerson came up with the idea for the band while living in Paris, France. Translating his last name's first four letters... "Amer" meaning "bitter" in French... and replacing that in his last name, "BITTERSON" ...the perfect band name... was born. The name captures the tone and emotion of each song with their telling of love lost, rejection, difficult times, overcoming odds and maturing. Bitterson hails from Chicago, IL and is made up of Phillip Amerson (guitars/vocals), Matthew Severing (drums), Elliot Taggert (bass), AT Jones (keys/bass/backing vocals).

30 Helens

Website
30 Helens is a spunky, energetic 7-piece original rock band formed by former Chicago Idol Winner Dave Wagner. Wanting to energize a stagnant Chicago music scene, founder Dave Wagner came up with the 30 Helens concept. No more 1995 grunge scene, good-bye DMB worshippers, and "been there done that" to top 10 radio cookie cutter bands, 30 Helens dares to be different. After suckering the other members into joining him, Dave's idea was to reinvent a forgotten form of original music in Chicago: Fun and upbeat. 30 Helens wants you to have fun! SOOO…here you have it…introducing 30 Helens! The best part about 30 Helens is that they are comprised of actual talent…a novel concept nowadays! 30 Helens blends Dave's award winning vocal talent with some of Chicago's best musicians. Each of the seven artists is from varying musical backgrounds allowing 30 Helens to seamlessly write and play across several musical genres.

AJ Kluth

Website
Come celebrate the release of the AJ Kluth Quintet’s new record “Twice Now” on Seattle’s OA2 Records (www.oa2records.com). The ajkQ is a band that plays modern instrumental jazz music that isn’t just for jazz snobs. You’ll hear instrumental takes of songs from Elliott Smith, Thom Yorke, Soul Coughing, and Rufus Wainwright as well as original music that isn’t just ding-ding-a-ling-ding-a-ling traditional swing - it’s bringing break-beats and odd time signatures into the new jazz tradition. Hey, not all of the tunes that sound good in an improvisational setting were written in the 1930s, right? This is modern improvised music that’s accessible, exciting, and relevant featuring some of Chicago’s best young talent.

The Minneaplois Henrys

Website
Live Review: "With The Minneapolis Henrys, what you see is what you get. Four simultaneously cadence-driven musicians whose collective talents enable the four-piece to woo an audience without pushing any inward-thinking art-rock tendencies on them. What they’ve created is a subtly brilliant live show that hardly allows its audience members time to breathe. They engage those in attendance by requesting even the most jaded of the hipster set to approach the stage, and “get jiggy with it,” rather than mug and pout in the distance. They’re about as personable a young band as you’re likely to see in the area." ~Consequence Of Sound "The Henrys craft nice, tight songs, create momentum and sustain it on both ballads and percussion driven rockers. Last I checked the weather online, both Minneapolis and Chicago, where the band now resides, were in the negatives. Thank god those poor souls have some hot, good ol’ fashioned Minneapolis rock to warm their freezing bones." ~Amplifier Magazine "Whether it's on hot and heavy fast tracks like "Magnum" or slower, more contemplative pieces like "Where My Mind's Been," the band makes indie rock that appears simple on the surface but has intricate layers underneath, melding jazz, rock, and punk. This Chicago band has been doing gigs for about two years now, forming tight musical bonds that allow fro wonderful interplay and improvisation. At the same time, they're new enough that they still sound like a college band—new, free, and willing to make mistakes to find the right sound. Plus, I love that band name."

On the Run

Website
On The Run sounds like Dispatch. Yeah, thats right, I said it. I keep hearing these really great bass lines in relatively unknown bands which gives hope yet to the Chicago music scene - I mean, at least its not just a bunch of cock rock guitarists, right? “Bone Sad” follows directly in the vein of Dispatch, The Dave Matthews Band, and other quasi jam bands, it has been a little while since I’ve heard a band that has a good enough sound to say their sound is of their influences instead of saying, well, they kind of sound like said bands, but alot crappier. Anyway, enough of the commentary, this song has a great groove to it, good, solid drums and the production is better than most. On The Run sounds like there are 4 guitarists, but there are only two - and they aren’t afraid to give the sax player a solo.

Katie & Pat

Website
Like most things, it started in spring, when the world is an ice cream social. Pat—the guy in the grandpa hat— was tired of flying solo. And Katie—with her hot and blue guitar—had some songs that were still half finished. They’d seen each other around their little Ohio town, and they’d played the same stages, but they always seemed to be walking in opposite directions. Then, one day, Katie— with her hot and blue eyes—made contact with Pat-- as he walked right beside her-- and you can guess the rest. Here comes Pat, stage right. He’s more the quiet type, but be warned, your lead guitar man’s a drummer at heart. And there’s Katie, stage left, the spunky acoustic Canadian. She’s got charisma coming out of her leg warmers, and yes, her sweet coos are reminding you of Jenny Lewis and Juliana Hatfield. It’s sweet-hearted folk-pop, but it’s razor sharp, sister! Toss in Pat’s tender gusto de la Sufjan, and you’ve got quite the wicked pair—cuddly and burly, sunny and moody, Batman and Robin Hood! If you’d like to make those Mates of State comparisons, go right ahead. But hang around a while and you’ll want to get hitched, too. This is Katie & Pat.

yer cronies

Website
"Yer Cronies exist in the same Neil Young-influenced sphere as Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket. But, like MMJ on their most recent album, they're not afraid to dabble in Radiohead-style experimentalism as well as various strains of '70s AM radio. "When I Grow Up" is all but guaranteed to show up on local year-end lists" (Ross Raihala, Pioneer Press).

The Locals

Website
The Locals are an alt-pop, indie rock band based in Chicago. “Big Picture” is the Locals’® fourth studio effort and their first full length CD in almost 6 years. Their style has covered the range from singer/songwriter to borderline jam band. But while this CD contains subtle winks at the past, this trio has emerged confident and head-strong from a three year recording hiatus to produce guitar heavy, sumptuous, alt-pop. These are smart, engaging songs. And although most of the tracks are instantly accessible, Doll’s lyrics give the erudite something to chew on. Produced, recorded and mixed by Steven Gillis (Filter), Big Picture is a collection of The Locals’® tight, power-pop tunes with a one two punch delivery.
