THE DEAD

Terrapin Flyer
Terrapin Flyer

Since 1999 Terrapin Flyer has featured a revolving cast of prominent members of Chicago's vibrant local music scene. Band members include current and former members of Cornmeal, The Dark Star Orchestra, Jack Straw and others. Often it pairs local musicians with such notable musicians as Vince Welnick (RIP), Melvin Seals and Tom Constanten for regional tours. The band has also performed with Sugar Blue, Fareed Haque and David Gans among many others. The nature of the band is improvisational and involves deep uncharted exploration in the medium of Grateful Dead and related music. No two Terrapin Flyer shows are ever the same and you never know who might show up to jam at a show, but you can always count on a great time with some of the most recognized artists in the music community! The premise around the music is to take songs by the Grateful Dead and related artists and to bring them to some place new. Keeping the magic that was the Grateful Dead alive is central to the band's philosophy.

THEANTI

Website
THEANTI: [thee-ant-ee] –noun 1. the unification of two words from the english language, "the" & "anti", to embrace the idealism of togetherness; even if you're against it 2008 will see the release of THEANTI's highly anticipated debut full-length album, Pollen. Demo sessions have begun, as they've opted to record all of the songs on their own before spending time and money in a studio to avoid rushing the writing process. A select few demos will be released on a split with fellow Indiana indie-rock quartet Signals early summer 2008. "Theanti combines the raw speed and intensity of punk, the aggressive yet artsy melodicism of post-hardcore and the gritty clang of indie-rock to create songs that burn with a raw passion that is extremely rare." - IndependentClauses.com

CRAWL was born out of a set break at a Chicago jazz venue, when the three musicians backing a great local jazz vocalist decided that they really enjoyed each other’s unique approach, and wanted to advance that into a setting that actually highlighted each of their unique playing abilities to create an original, instrumental project. Of course, as any musician knows, talk like this is always present on gigs - its usually a great way to seal the deal on a networking opportunity in order to make sure the calls keep coming. Well, this one only took a year of talk before it was put into action. Three powerhouse Chicago musicians adding yet another project to their roster seemed a daunting task, but as the planets aligned in some supportive fashion, a rehearsal, and then another took place. After only a few rehearsals a show was booked and CRAWL was presented to the public. The response was overwhelming, including high kudos from some of Chicago’s most prominent fusion players, as well as bartenders and non-musicians. Even the soundman loved it! So now the band is real and ready to share their music with the rest of the world. CRAWL is comprised of composer, and keyboardist extraordinaire Paul Mutzabaugh playing exclusively Wurlitzer in this band, bassist and composer Chris Clemente, and drummer/percussionist Rich Stitzel. Three totally different backgrounds, one ridiculous sounding instrumental trio. This band has super high energy, very deep grooves, and incredible polyrhythmic interaction in an improvisational approach to original, structured compositions. Paul Mutzabaugh, Wurlitzer – Toured the U.S. and Canada as a tenor drummer for the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps (1997-2000) which gave him an intense foundation for his intentionally rhythmic approach to composing, improvising, and music making in general. He is the leader and composer for The Renegades, one of Chicago’s premier fusion groups. Paul works with many of the finest musicians in Chicago in a variety of styles including jazz, pop/rock/R&B, and gospel. He performs with John Elmquist’s Hard Art Groop, Typhanie Monique, Aaron McEver’s M13, and the tributasaurus sister band Ladies of the Canyon. Paul is absolutely mesmerizing to listen to and will freak anyone’s mind with his taste, intensity, harmonic density, and rhythmic accuracy. Chris Clemente, bass – Performed with numerous artists of varied styles including Umpherys McGee, Kick the Cat, Jon Secada, Randy Brecker, Hiram Bullock, Percy Sledge, The Coasters, Christian Howes, and Bobby Floyd. He has toured in the U.S., Scandinavia and the Orient. Other Chicago groups Chris has supported include: Funkhouse, Hello Dave, Renegades, Make Believe, Tributosaurus, and Ladies of the Canyon. He has written music for Harpo Studios (Oprah Show), and NPR. He a featured artist and product tester for Warwick basses, and recently became the designer of a signature bass (the CC) model by Ramirez basses. Chris has undying energy for keeping things cooking. He is a super funky bassist with his heart in the music, and his soul in the groove. Rich Stitzel, drums – Texas native, transplant to Chicago in 2001, Rich has brought a new vibe to the Chicago music scene. His fat, powerful pocket, and improvisational concepts are unique, fresh and quite intense. He has performed all over the United States, Canada, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Egypt. He has toured with the Grammy nominated powerhouse vocalist Cathy Richardson, Platinum selling country sensation Miranda Lambert, Legendary soulstress Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Steely Dan saxman Cornelius Bumpus, and Les Paul’s violinist prodigy Christian Howes to name but a few. He has recorded on over 50 albums covering all genres as well as jingles and industrial films. He is endorsed by Evans drumheads, and Vic Firth Sticks.

Prosaic

Website
Prosaic: ordinary, common, simple. So this band doesn't have the poetic mission of taking over the world, or reinventing the way human beings interact with sound, but it does excel at the fundamentals: pick good songs, write good songs, hire good players, practice, practice, practice, gig a lot, develop a fan base and take care of them, learn from the masters. You know, the boring stuff. well, this group finds the boring stuff pretty inspiring. Prosaic plays jazz of every era, from the early days of be-bop, to post bop, to latin, to soul and funk, to more contemporary artists. If you like jazz at all, this band has something for you. Featuring alumni of such Chicago bands as Family Lifted, The East Village Project, Pala, Fat Time, Starcandy, P-1, Smittyvision, The F-Word, and the Powers that Be, Prosaic is a tree with many branches and deep roots. Time Out Chicago Description This local quartet plays what could only be called “soundtrack music.” Its repertoire basically sounds like dramatic background music indicating, say, the advent of a gunfight or the main characters’ arrival in an exotic small town. And they do it with bluegrass instrumentation; Tom McGettrick’s banjo takes all the lead lines. This is an interesting idea that the group should take farther.

Nearly all creative aspects including illustrations, sound production and web development are performed by Mr. Gray’s members, defining an ongoing determination and commitment to providing an honest, independent product.

The Fervor

Website
Among The Fervor’s songs can be found an honesty not unlike PJ Harvey’s — gut-punching in impact, but life-affirming in its lasting spark and hopeful mysteries. Here, coming out of the indie stronghold of Louisville, it’s filled out by a harmonious but restless band standing with their singer who’s not afraid to open up that she wants “to party with the people I know can feed my hungry, sex-crazed mind and make me fill my lungs up like I was really breathing/like I was holding my breath all this wasted time/I’m ready to start livin’…” And The Fervor are ready to share the new life they are finding—here and now.

Eyesearsnose

Website
This local co-ed quintet is genuinely exciting; they are a new band that is on to something good. Raw and unorthodox folk-pop, its post-collegiate smarts (the lyrics deal with identity and existentialist themes) are laid out against summer-nights boogie-it's as if the group is splitting the difference on a Susan Sontag/Stephen Stills obsession. The band all switches between instruments, and puts a shade of insurgent amateur chaos into the mix; it's this unpredictability and slight strangeness that underpins the band's energy and sound, and makes the songs feel fresh and ambitious. Along with locals Bird Names, Eyesearsnose are part of a growing scene of bands taking inspiration from creativity and energy of the outr sounds of the noise scene, but making it into pleasant pop.

Johnny Comes Late

Website
Formed by Janusz “Johnny” Klonowski and Tadek Majewski in 2006, Chicago’s own Johnny Comes Late has finally arrived! After a few line up changes and many hours in our practice space on Chicago’s West Side we felt something was still missing in our music. Janusz, who has collaborated with many great polish musicians including cold wave master and EMI recording artist Robert Gawlinski of Wilki fame remember of a band mate that he played with many years ago. They invited him over for a jam session. The line up was established! We found our unique sound! The perfect balance was found in Jerry Lukomski, who has been drumming for over 25 years with many revered bands from the eastern block. He brought the needed edge our music. Over the years we have experimented all over genres and eras from the early 70’s sounds of Pink Floyd to 80s new wave/alternative acts such as The Police and Jane’s Addiction all with the harmonies of modern jazz and the flow of today’s electronic artists such as Thievery Corporation, France’s Air and Ben Neill, inventor of the mutantrumpet. Johnny Comes Late is gaining notoriety and a solid fan base in the Chicago area and is ready to take on more gigs from small sized venues and clubs to the summer festival circuits of the Midwest

Fifth World

Website
Fifth World came together in the summer of 2007. The band consists of Ryan McGrow on guitars, drum machine, midi processing, vocals and noises; Marty Rocha on drums, midi pads, sequencing, and vocals; Timothy "Smu" McCarthy on electric bass, double bass, keyboards, noises, and vocals ; Asif Wilson on moog, Juno, Rhodes, triton ; and Greg Firak on guitars and vocals. The band much like the concept of it’s name is moving towards a new age of music, where vintage instruments are interwoven with electronic instruments, computers, midi triggers, and sequencing. The over all sound is a musical blend of everything learned from past genres of sound mixed with new concepts, tones and textures. With lyrics posed in existentialism, and rhythms steeped in dance, and soul. The music is being made to create excitement, movement and to spark a deeper thought regarding our purpose here in this plane of reality. The band is really trying to jump start the evolution of a global consciousness through the use of vibrations, sacred geometry, ancient knowledge, psychedelic shamanistic experience and thought provoking lyrics. This is all occurring with a multimedia extravaganza consisting of projections, lights, and the Fifth World dancers (beautiful woman flag dancing).

Christopher (Andrew) Stelloh, a veteran of hardcore punk bands from the Washington DC metro area, didn't really know a damn thing about any of the aforementioned sounds before abandoning the District for the midwest in 2005. Since 1957, Chicago has been home to the Old Town School of Folk Music. It is the birthplace of House. As far back as the 1940's, the pickers and strummers of the Mississippi delta began migrating to Chicago to make the blues electric. Most recently, 'insurgent' country acts like those found on the Chicago imprint, Bloodshot, have spat out the bubblegum-laden shine of Nashville and have put acoustic guitars back in the hands of outlaws. A town so rich with musical diversity is bound to get under your skin, no matter where you come from (or how much you love Fugazi). Written and recorded in less than nine months, "Land Pirate Lullabies" is overloaded with Christopher and his cohorts (most of whom are transplant Chicagoans as well) churning out old-timey, folk, country and blues inflected pop tunes. Tracks such as "When The Pumps Run Dry" and "Dead Men" showcase the talents of Chicago locals The Jai-Alai Savant and The Armor Class, just to name a few. Maggie Kubley adds a touch of polish with her vocals on "Dolcezza" and Christopher's version of The Throwing Muses gem "Not Too Soon" - making a stark contrast to his voice, which owes as much to nicotine as it does to artists like Tom Waits and Nick Cave. The District's own Harry Dixon (aka Harry Hotter of The Ruling Class and producer of the duo Oblique Brown) turned "Two Wheels And Righteous", a scathing critique of bicycle activism (cleverly disguised as the blues), into his own brand of dubbed-out drums 'n drone. "Land Pirate Lullabies" is a country record for punk kids. It is a blues album for styled hipsters. It is folk music for laptop-heads. There is something universally appealing that shines through the layers of acoustic guitar, accordion, harmonica and trombone. Fact is, these are damn good songs - no matter where you come from."

Cheater Slicks
Cheater Slicks

Website
Anyone who looks for an intense musical experience would do well to check out Cheater Slicks — the long misunderstood masters of primitive, primordial, psychedelic and explosive rock and roll. Look into their past and you’ll see a pretty amazing history for a band. It includes brief bass-playing stints from Merle Allin (G.G.’s brother) and Alpo (from the Real Kids), admiration from Jon Spencer (who produced what could be their best-known album, “Don’t Like You”), Mudhoney and New Bomb Turks (who both covered Cheater Slicks tunes) and work as R&B legend and Motown producer Andre Willams’ backup band. Besides all those irrelevant pieces of trivia, you’ll find a whole hellofalot of glorious noise. And that’s the important thing.

The Negligents

Website
The Negligents started in 1997 with a guitar, a bass and a 4-track. Pretty visceral stuff in the beginning. Then Mike "Satchy" Sacharski (Butt Nuggett) joined in on guitar and Nathan Jerde (The Mushuganas, The Ponys) played drums. Nathan left to play with The Mushuganas and The Ponys and Satchy moved over to drums. The Negligents were now established as a three-piece. After many rock-filled years, Satchy left to start a family. Many drummers came and went through the next few years. Chad Romanski (Sarge, MirrorAmerica, The Dials), Dave Wade (Rhoda, Tokyo Expando), Bob Rising (Poster Children, Bob Rising and the Blisters, Seam), Doug Meis (The Dials, Exo). All were excellent and Matt and I were honored to get to play with each of them. Finally, after a year or so of rotating drummers, The Negligents hooked up with "The Captain." He went and got hitched after a few years of playing and decided to settle down as well. Now Caleb has jumped on the drummer carousel for a few spins around the city. We like him very much. But enough about us...

The Midwest Beat

Website
Midwest Beat mines the rich vein of 60's influenced garage, rock, psyche and even a bit of twang.

Royal Pines

Website
Royal Pines' dark-hued tunes are inspired by the bleak, often humorous abyss into which we all gaze. I'm not talking about mortality, people. I'm talking about the work day, the minor annoyances and dangers of city living, sleepless nights, televisions caught between channels. This music helps stave off the dread and disgust.
